How to determine your skin type?

Skin type is determined based on skin characteristics. So before performing the test know your skin type. It is important to have a look at the skin types and their characteristics.

Oily skin type

Oily skin looks oily, shiny, and greasy and feels slick because of the overproduction of sebum/ oil by sebaceous glands.

Characteristics of oily skin:

  • Fewer wrinkles
  • Feel smooth
  • Enlarged pores/ hair follicles

Care of oily skin:

  • Oily skin is prone to dead skin layers. So you have to exfoliate by using chemical peels.
  • To keep oil in control, use oil-free liquid moisturizers.
  • Use products containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and non-comedogenic products.
  • Use lotions instead of thick heavy creams, because they may clog your pores and make them more oily.
  • Cleanse your face/ wash out makeup completely every night.

Things you should consider

Always remember, that moisturizing your oily skin is important because when you do not provide proper moisturizer, it reacts and produces more oil.

Dry skin type:

Dry skin is exactly opposite to oily skin in all ways. It produces less oil than normal. It looks dull, dry, rough, flaky, red and Irritated.

Mainly it is uncomfortable skin because in dry skin, the skin barrier is disrupted and loses its ability to retain water and becomes dry.

Characteristics of dry skin:

  • Rough, dry, flaky.
  • Feels tight.
  • More wrinkles.
  • Cracky areas.
  • Pores are not visible.

Care for dry skin:

  • Don’t overuse soup.
  • Avoid long hot showers.
  • Moisturize immediately after washing.
  • Use fragrance and alcohol-free products.
  • Use products containing glycerin, and aloe vera.
  • Don’t scrub your skin with the towel, instead pat.
  • Use moisturizers that are thick in consistency like cream.
  • Apply moisturizer when your skin is wet, it helps moisturizer to absorb well.

Combination skin type

Combo skin is actually what it sounds like. It is a combination of oily and dry patches. The T-Zone (includes forehead, nose, chin) is mostly oily and cheeks dry. It becomes tricky to care for combination skin.

Characteristics of combination skin:

  • Oily and flaky patches
  • The T-zone looks shiny and contains large pores
  • Cheeks look dry and pores are invisible.

Care of combination skin:

  • Apply separate products on separate areas
  • Moisturize well at cheeks.
  • Use light moisturizer.
  • Use blotting paper to absorb oil at the T-zone
  • Use a mild face cleanser

Normal/ Neutral skin type:

Normal skin produces a normal quantity of oil as our skin requires. It is a hydrated and comfortable kind of skin. Unlike combination skin, it does not have dry and oily patches. It is a low-maintenance kind of skin.

Characteristics of Normal skin:

  • Less sensitive
  • Smooth skin texture
  • Normal pore size
  • Less prone to acne

Care of normal skin:

  • Moisturize day and night
  • Use non-comedogenic products

Sensitive Skin Type:

This kind of skin is vulnerable to external irritants. It is also acne-prone. Sensitive skin may be dry sensitive skin or oily sensitive skin.

In sensitive skin, pores are blocked due to excess sebum.

It may be due to Puberty, teenage, stress, certain medications, diet, or hormonal fluctuations

 Characteristics of sensitive skin:

  • Feel painful to touch
  • Red, feel like burning

Care of sensitive skin:

  • Determine what stimulates the sensitivity of your skin and avoid those products.
  • Better do a patch test of products before you can apply on.
  • Use products with fewer ingredients, so your skin does not react.
  • Don’t pop your pimples.
  • Don’t scrub with a towel.
